The Lions Reserves dished out their second drubbing of Broadbeach for 2012, following a resounding 117-point win over the Cats at H & A Oval on Saturday.

The win catapulted the Lions into second spot on the NEAFL ladder after 10 Rounds.

Southport moved into first place after defeating Labrador over the weekend, but with the Lions only a game behind, the teams’ Round 13 clash at Southport looms as season-defining.

The Lions’ percentage skyrocketed following their record rout of UWS, and Saturday’s victory boosted it further to an extraordinary 180.12%.

With sharp-shooter Aaron Cornelius in the senior side, Jordan Lisle stepped up with six straight goals, while Bryce Retzlaff bagged seven and Patrick Karnezis kicked three in the 24.15 (159) to 5.12 (42) rout.

Broadbeach stymied the scoreboard assault initially in cool and overcast conditions on the Gold Coast, but the Lions soon hit their goal scoring strides.

Retzlaff registered the opening six-pointer after a Steve Wrigley pass, and the skipper set up the next goal to Brad Harvey soon after with a deft handball assist.

Alex Kitching and a mud-caked Karnezis both converted close-range set shots, and when Retzlaff and Harvey potted through another each, the visitor’s quarter time lead stood at 40 points.

Broadbeach finally registered their first goal through Jordan Eastwell at the start of the second term, and the contest tightened considerably with many more stoppages and a heap of hard tackling.

Wrigley and Retzlaff were the only Lions goal-kickers for the term, and the margin at the long break remained at 40.

The Lions blew the game wide open in the third quarter, piling on ten goals to three to put the result beyond doubt.

The term was highlighted by brilliant goals from the boundary line from Karnezis and Retzlaff, and a Jordan Lisle major via a pinpoint 40-metre speared pass from a bearded Callum Bartlett.

There were two more big moments in the third quarter which favoured the visitors.

First there was an all-in melee which resulted in an Amon Buchanan goal after a free kick and 50 metre penalty midway through the quarter.

Then there was mass confusion when the players thought they’d heard the three-quarter-time siren and marched off the ground.

But timekeepers yelled to the umpires that there was still 45 seconds left in the term, so both teams were made to return to the field and play out the remaining time.

The Lions were the only side glad the quarter resumed.

They immediately swept the footy out of the centre, and Retzlaff goalled after marking another precise Steve Wrigley pass. Spectators shook their heads in bemusement at the farcical turn of events.

As the final quarter began, the rain which had threatened all afternoon began bucketing down on the H & A oval turf and the match descended into a sodden scrap.

Broadbeach were held goalless for the term, while Lisle, Retzlaff, Claye Beams, Sam Sheldon and Brenton Saunders kicked majors for the Lions to increase the full-time gap to 117 points.

Team statistics were predictably lopsided the Lions’ way, punctuated by a 62-40 inside 50 count.

Individually, Ryan Harwood led all comers with 36 quality touches, Karnezis played probably his best game for the year in racking up 33 possessions, and Cheynee Stiller was typically consistent with 33 disposals quarterbacking the defence.

Sam Docherty was another who had a season best outing, amassing 28 clean touches and providing a lot of rebound from the backline.

Like the Seniors, the Lions Reserves have the Bye next week. They next face the Gold Coast Suns Reserves at Southport on Saturday June 16 at 1:30pm.
