The meaning of Yeo
Elliot Yeo’s surname has already caused some confusion among fans and media surrounding its origins and pronunciation.
When he was first selected to make his senior debut for the Lions last week, Yeo’s name was on everyone’s lips - even though many continued to incorrectly pronounce him as “Yee-o” or “Yo-ee”.
His background was also questioned as to whether he was of Chinese or Cantonese origin.
But during a live chat with Lions fans on Wednesday, Yeo cleared up some of the common misconceptions surrounding his surname.
“It’s pronounced ‘Yo’ and I think it’s Cornish,” he said.
The name will no doubt lend itself to some creative chants around the Gabba in future seasons, with some Lions fans already taking great delight in shouting “Yeo” whenever the creative wingman touches the ball.
The East Fremantle recruit, who was omitted from the Lions' Round 10 side, also revealed that he has settled well into the laid-back Brisbane lifestyle.
“The homesickness has been OK so far, but I do miss mum’s cooking every now and then - particularly her lasagne,” Yeo said.
“I’m living with Patrick Wearden and Brad Harvey at the moment, and really enjoying the freedom!”
“Everyone takes turns (in cooking), but whenever Weardo cooks, I just grab a Subway instead!”
Even though he shares a household with two other young players from interstate, Yeo said he gets plenty of help from some his more senior team-mates.
“Dan Rich helps me out a bit, and Blacky also has a quiet word or two every now and then,” he said.
