It doesn’t get much bigger than this, the top two teams going head-to-head in a Friday night blockbuster.
We take you through the three things you need to know for Friday night’s clash against the Crows.
#1 Head to Head
With a rivalry dating back to the very first AFLW Grand Final in 2017, Friday’s night match against the Crows couldn’t be any bigger.
Meeting seven times over the past six seasons, including in two Grand Finals, the Lions currently hold the ledger by a narrow margin with four wins to Adelaide’s three.
Heading to the game? Everything you need to know is here.
The last time these two sides came up against each other was in Round 1, Season Six, where Adelaide walked away the 30-point winners.
That scoreline is the largest winning margin between these two teams, with the average margin a much closer game at 13-points.
Regardless of previous results, the Lions will be on the hunt for a big win over Adelaide on Friday night as they look to firmly assert themselves as Premiership contenders.
#2 Powerhouse Forwards
Friday night’s game could be won or lost in the forward halves, with two powerhouse forward line-ups going head-to-head at opposite ends of the field.
Jesse Wardlaw has been dominant in front of goal this season for the Lions, kicking 12 majors in her six games so far this season to sit atop the competition leading goalkickers tally.
When combined with crafty small forwards Courtney Hodder and Greta Bodey and supported by fellow talls Dakota Davidson and Taylor Smith, it makes for a threatening forward line-up.
Down the opposite end of the field, Adelaide have plenty of firepower in Season Six Leading Goalkicker Ash Woodland, who has already booted 11 goals in seven games this season.
Joined in the forward line-up by an experienced Danielle Ponter and clever ball user Hannah Munyard, and supported by versatile tall Caitlin Gould and an in-form Chelsea Randall, Adelaide will have a number of options for goal come Friday night.
And with two forward line-ups like that, both Brisbane and Adelaide defenders will have their work cut out for them.
# Proud of our PRIDE
We’ll be bringing the PRIDE to Metricon on Friday night with Round 8 marking the third AFLW Pride Round.
A much-loved staple of the AFLW Fixture, Pride Round celebrates the diversity and inclusion of the LGBTQI+ communities and acknowledges the AFL’s journey to being a more inclusive sport.
As part of the celebrations, the Lions will wear their second-ever AFLW Pride guernsey, designed in collaboration with AFLW players Belle Dawes and Jesse Wardlaw.
The design features the Pride Rainbow behind the traditional Fitzroy Lion, with the a pride of smaller Fitzroy Lions imprinted on the rainbow, demonstrating the Club’s support of the LGBTQI+ community and the desire to be a Club for all.
“Having a Pride Round and creating this safe community in AFLW for everyone to who they are is so important,” Dawes said.
“We still have such a long way to go, and I think that’s why it’s so important that we do have a Pride Round. It’s about showing up and creating this safe space for everyone to feel comfortable, welcomed and accepted to just be themselves.”
Fans heading to Friday’s match are encouraged to wear rainbow attire in support of the LGBTQI+ community, with tickets to the blockbuster clash still available HERE.
Fans attending the game can purchase the Season 7 Pride guernsey for a special game day price of $100 (normally $120 in-store and online here).
