Scans have revealed that Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger sustained an Achilles injury during the Lions’ Round 3 match against Fremantle.

He was subbed off in the first quarter of the game with the injury and underwent scans on Monday morning.

Leuenberger is expected to miss at least 6 weeks.

Lions General Manager, Football Operations, Dean Warren, said that the injury was a blow to both Leuenberger and the team.

“It’s obviously very disappointing for Matthew to be on the sidelines for this length of time,” Warren said.

“We believe that he is developing into one of the best ruckmen in the competition so he will be a loss for us.”

“However, over the off-season we made it a priority to add depth in this area and we have every confidence that Ben Hudson and Billy Longer will do an outstanding job holding up our ruck stocks.”

“Ben brings a great deal of experience, while Billy performed well on debut on the weekend against a challenging opponent.”

The Lions play the Gold Coast in QClash3 this Saturday at the Gabba.
