Bates and Bodey have informed the Brisbane Lions that they will depart the Club to seek new opportunity with another AFLW team.
Bates was the Lions first ever AFLW draft pick and a key contributor to Brisbane’s extended success since the competition’s inception.
A star of the league, the 27-year-old was rewarded with the W Medal in Season 6 following an outstanding season.
Bates departs as a 3x All-Australian, 4x Best & Fairest and winner of both the AFLCA Champion Player and AFLPA MVP awards in 2022.
Bodey was recognised with All-Australian honours in Season 7 and voted Runner-Up Best & Fairest in Season 6 after finishing as Brisbane's leading goal kicker.
Both played in Brisbane’s inaugural Premiership win in 2021.
Head of Women’s Football, Bree Brock thanked Emily and Greta for their contribution to the Club.
“Emily was our first ever selection at the draft and since arriving has become one of the most decorated players in the competition’s history,” she said.
“Greta came to us from soccer, having only played a handful of Aussie rules games and has developed into a star of the competition.”
“At this time, we understand that Emily and Greta will be seeking fresh starts at another AFLW club.”
“Both are elite players in the comp and we look forward to working with the AFL to seek adequate compensation.”
