The Brisbane Lions will travel more than 600 kilometres across Queensland over two days for the AFL’s annual Community Camp next week.

The entire playing group will be spread across thirteen different regions from as far west as Chinchilla, to as north as Bundaberg.

Harris Andrews, who will be visiting Toowoomba in his fifth Community Camp, said the visits are an opportunity for players to engage with the grassroots footy community.

“I think it’s really good to get out to the regional areas where they might not get an opportunity to come to the Gabba or see football first hand,” he said.

“It’s great to go out to towns where they love footy and spend time with people that are really excited about footy.”

Mark Ensor, AFL Queensland State Manager- Participation and Diversity, said “AFL Community Camp is an important program that allows us to connect Queensland communities with our game.”

“AFL Queensland is committed to giving back to the community, especially those in regional areas.

“Over two days our AFL Queensland staff and Brisbane Lions AFL players and coaches will visit over 100 schools, 20 community clubs and reach over 3000 kids.”

Season 2019 marks the seventeenth year of the AFL Community Camp program.

Since the first camps in 2003, there has been;

  • 6,881 primary and secondary schools visited
  • 1,284,624 students reached during school visits

  • 47,420 people visited in hospitals and aged care facilities
  • 48,052 people attended Official Functions
  • 56,660 people have attended community football forums
