The Brisbane Lions are partnering with The Long Walk, AFLQ and Deadly Choices for the 2017 Brisbane Long Walk as part of NAIDOC week.
The Long Walk from Musgrave Park to the Gabba will be held on Saturday 8 July starting from 3:00pm ahead of the Lions’ match against Geelong later that evening.
This is the only “Long Walk” held outside of the Dreamtime at the Richmond v. Essendon match at the MCG.
The Long Walk recognises and celebrates the historic trek taken by Michael Long on 21 November 2004, walking from his home town in the suburbs of Melbourne all the way to Parliament House in Canberra – more than 650 kilometres away – in an effort to get Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues back on the national agenda.
The Long Walk provides a much needed public vehicle allowing Australians (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) to express their commitment to reconciliation and a united Australia.
The first 300 participants to register will receive a ‘The Long Walk’ t-shirt and match ticket. If you miss out on the initial 300 tickets, you can still take part in The Long Walk but will need to purchase a ticket to enter the game.
Guests will form a Guard of Honour and kids from the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health’s Deadly Choices Education Program will participate in Auskick Grid Games at half time.
The Brisbane Lions have also invited past Indigenous players along to participate in The Long Walk event and Guard of Honour ahead of our match against Geelong.
Registrations are being taken on the AFLQ website.
