The Brisbane Lions have revealed their first playing squad for 2013 ahead of Saturday night’s NAB Cup opener against Gold Coast and Hawthorn at Metricon Stadium.

Among the 33-man squad are seven ‘new faces’ who are set to don the maroon, blue and gold for the first time in a competitive AFL match.

Off-season recruits Brent Moloney and Stefan Martin will make their first on-field appearance with their new Club, along with 18 year-old Marco Paparone, who was taken with Pick No.23 at last year’s AFL National Draft.

Sam Docherty, Callum Bartlett, Justin Clarke and Sam Michael are also set to experience their first official AFL hit-out.

Among the more notable absentees are Co-Captains Jonathan Brown and Jed Adcock, Jared Polec, Pearce Hanley, Brent Staker, Simon Black, Matthew Leuenberger, and first-round draft pick Sam Mayes, whose pre-season workloads are being carefully managed by the Club in the lead-up to Round One of the AFL Premiership Season.

In the absence of Brown and Adcock, newly appointed Vice-Captains Daniel Rich and Tom Rockliff will share the captaincy duties during the series of matches.

With Leuenberger sidelined, Billy Longer will likely shoulder most of the ruck responsibilities together with Michael and Martin.

Jordan Lisle and Aaron Cornelius look set to fill the void left by Brown up forward, while the Lions’ defence seems relatively settled despite Adcock’s absence.
