This week’s throwback moment heads back to seven years ago when the Brisbane Lions last tasted victory against the West Coast Eagles.
The Round 10 encounter in 2012 was Johnathan Brown’s 100th game as Captain of the Club, while Tom Rockliff was celebrating his 50th match.
Just over 15,000 fans were treated to an enthralling contest at the Gabba, with the Lions - perched near the bottom of the ladder - holding their own against the ladder-leading Eagles.
The Lions grabbed an eight-point lead at the first change and extended the margin to 11 points at half time.
As was expected, the Eagles fought back in the third quarter and kicked five goals to one to snatch a 14-point lead heading into the last stanza.
The margin exceeded 20 points early in the fourth before the Lions began to claw their way back into the contest and eventually hit the front.
The lead changed hands a couple of times before the Eagles had a chance to go nine points ahead with only a couple of minutes remaining, but the kick off the ground was thankfully touched to register just a point.
On the resulting kick in, a series of quick passes up the middle of the field left the ball in James Polkinghorne’s hands 65 metres out from goal. Polkinghorne unleashed a monster barrel that sailed through for a major and secured a thrilling two-point victory for the Lions, 16.6 (102) to 15.10 (100).
Polkinghorne, Josh Drummond and Josh Green all kicked three goals apiece on the day, while Jed Adcock collected 28 touches and Rockliff had 27.
