We love Qclash, and we love Sir Doug Nicholls Round... and it seems Christmas has come early because we're about to get both on one night!
As we prepare to play the coastal Suns and eye off a ninth straight Qclash Cup, we can't help but think of all the exciting things happening.
The dreamer in us wonders whether Will Ashcroft can win the medal named after his father, while we're a bit cross we may not get the Berry vs Berry showdown we were hoping for, with Tom Berry named as the sub for Gold Coast.
Anyway enough intro-ing, time to get to the juicy stuff!
Last time we met
We took home our eighth consecutive win in the Qclash last time we played the Suns.
Here's what the lovely folks at the AFL had to say about it:
"BRISBANE used a powerful final term to all-but kill off Gold Coast's finals chances with a 17-point triumph at the Gabba in Round 19.
The Suns took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Lions put the foot to the floor, kicking five goals to one to roar to an entertaining 16.14 (110) to 14.9 (93) victory.
It was Brisbane's eighth straight win in the QClash (we said that already) and solidified its spot in the top four.
Unlike many of those previous victories, this was anything but one-way traffic though, as the Suns scraped and clawed and gave the Lions a stern test, leading at half-time and three-quarter time.
Joe Daniher and Charlie Cameron were dangerous forward targets with three goals apiece, while Hugh McCluggage (25 disposals) and Lachie Neale (32) were instrumental midfielders."
Be excited about
Sir Doug Nicholls Round
Unless you've been living under a rock, most of you know that this time of year is an incredibly special one!
For those that don't, here's a quick intro to the weekend. Sir Doug Nicholls Round celebrates, acknowledges and thanks Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players, volunteers, administrators, umpires, and fans, past and present for their contributions to our game and football as an industry.
This weekend, we will be wearing an Indigenous Guernsey designed by former players, Ash McGrath and Des Headland that represents the stories of each player and their families.
Side note: If you haven't bought yours yet, you're running out of time! Buy yours here.
Not only that, our boys will present Gold Coast with a didgeridoo created by ex-Lions, Hawks player and proud Kooma/Kunja man, Rhan Hooper to pay respect to our opponent, their families and their ancestors.
Kiddy's 50th
It's a half century for one of our favourite rising stars on Saturday night (we're not crying you are..).
Keidean Coleman will run out for his 50th appearance in the maroon, blue and gold, fittingly in a round that celebrates his proud culture.
One of the coolest customers at the Club while simultaneously boasting one of the most lethal left foots in the game, we can't wait to watch our young gun strut his stuff!
Match-ups we're keen for
Jarrod Berry vs Tom Berry 😢
We were flat as a tack to see that Tom Berry was omitted and the sub for this Saturday's clash. So to ensure we all get the match-up we're eager to see, we detailed a letter down the M1 that reads as follows:
Dear Stewie Dew,
If you're reading this, we hope you're well!
All we ask is that you please activate Tom Berry as the sub during the game so we can have the Berry Brothers match up.
The Gabba crowd want it, we want it, and deep down, we think you want it too.
So please Mr. Dew, think about it!
Sincerely,
Brisbane Lions Media Team
Neale & Dunkley vs Rowell & Anderson
On a more serious note, there is going to be some serious heat on the footy in the midfield early.
Lachie Neale and Josh Dunkley have both had great starts to the season, but the Gold Coast 'pups' in Rowell and Anderson can't be underestimated.
For the footy heads out there, the Suns are currently the No.1 clearance differential team in the competition, while we are the No.1 clearance team in the league.
And for those scrambling for Google Translate to explain what on earth we just said, essentially that means we both get the ball away from the contest better than a lot of teams.
