The Brisbane Lions Australian Football Club acknowledges and recognises the invaluable contributions made by our First Peoples to our Club and to our great game.

Our Club has a proud history with Indigenous players, highlighted by the AFL’s Indigenous Round being named after Sir Doug Nicholls, a former Fitzroy player. Sir Doug played an instrumental role in campaigning for a ‘yes’ vote in the 1967 referendum that granted legal and voting rights to First Peoples.

Recently, the Club conducted a voluntary survey within our organisation, including board members, staff and players, to gauge their thoughts on the First Peoples Voice to Parliament. The results showed significant support for it and as such, the Brisbane Lions Board, led by the views of the majority of our people, supports the First Peoples Voice to Parliament.

We strongly believe that Australian rules football is a powerful platform for promoting positive societal change. Walking alongside our community, we commit to listening, learning and working together to create a Club that respects and welcomes everyone, from our First Peoples to our newest Australians.

As we approach the end of the year, the Government plans to hold a referendum on the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution. We acknowledge there will be a range of views amongst our members and we want to make it clear that the Club is not directing you on how to vote. We respect the individual decisions of all Australians and encourage everyone to seek the information they need to form their own views.
