While Simon Black was the undoubtedly the biggest drawcard from last week’s NEAFL ANZAC Day showdown in Mackay, it was Jordan Lisle who stole the show.

Lisle helped get the Lions Reserves off to a flying start against the Gold Coast, with six first-half goals in the team's five-goal win.

The big forward finished with eight goals for the game and was named as the best afield – just ahead of Brownlow Medallist Black who did most of the damage in the middle.

Reserves Coach Leigh Harding said Lisle's form has been consistently building since the start of the season.

“He probably could have kicked bags in most games but has been a bit inaccurate at times,” Harding said.

“He was particularly good in the first quarter and first half of last Thursday’s game, He really stamped his authority on the game from the start.”

“He’s been really good, and has stood up as Captain for our first five games.”

While Lisle is yet to crack it for a senior match in 2013, more performances like the one against the Suns will make it hard for selectors to ignore him.

“The forward set-up up was pretty settled at the start of the season,  but I guess Stefan Martin’s ankle injury might open the door a little bit for him. Even though Leuey and Billy rotated between that forward/ruck role well against Melbourne, Jordy might not be far away,” Harding said.

The match also marked the inaugural ANZAC Day clash in Mackay – an initiative that proved an overwhelming success.

“They played the match on a cricket ground, which was just superb. It was in immaculate condition and had the white picket fence surrounding it and everything,” Harding said.

“There were people everywhere – I think they got around 3,000 in total. They had tents set-up with people playing two-up and enjoying a few beers.”

It was a terrific atmosphere, and the game was very well received by the local people of Mackay. Hopefully it becomes an annual thing.
