LAST TIME THEY MET
A spirited Lions outfit went toe-to-toe with ladder-leaders Collingwood on the eve of the AFL Finals on football’s grandest stage - the MCG.
The Lions matched their more fancied opponents for much of the first half, before the Magpies kicked away in the third quarter to take a 46-point lead into the final break. However, the Lions refused to give up, and stormed home with seven final quarter goals to threaten a major upset. But the Lions’ run had been left a little too late, with Collingwood running out 18-point winners.
Ruckman Matthew Leuenberger played one of his finest games for the Club with a career-high 24 disposals, while Tom Rockliff, Jack Redden and Simon Black were all busy in the midfield. Ash McGrath, meanwhile, caused headaches for the Collingwood defenders with three goals up forward.
Travis Cloke spearheaded Collingwood with five goals up forward, while Scott Pendlebury, Dane Swan, Alan Didak, Luke Ball and Dayne Beams all collected 30 or more disposals.
Brownlow Medal Votes: 3 - D. Swan (Coll), 2 - T. Cloke (Coll), 1 - T. Rockliff (BL)
