The Brisbane Lions are deeply saddened by the loss of former Fitzroy Captain and Club Hall of Famer Matt Rendell who passed away aged 64 this afternoon.

A well-loved and respected gentleman of the game, Rendell played for Fitzroy from 1981-1991, and finished his playing career with the Brisbane Bears in 1992.

His contribution as a player was significant, receiving two best and fairest and twice All-Australian as a Fitzroy ruckman/forward in 164 games, as well as being Fitzroy captain from 1985-1987. He played a further 13 games with the Bears in 1992.

Rendell then forged a successful career in club administration and recruiting, while also working in the media in recent years.

Brisbane Lions CEO, Greg Swann, said the thoughts of the entire Brisbane Lions family were with the Rendell’s.

“We pass on our deepest sympathies to Matt’s wife Leonie, his children Daniel and James and the entire Rendell family at this very sad time,” he said.

“Matt left an extraordinary mark on our game and I know many, especially those in Fitzroy circles, will be mourning his loss today.

“He is a true champion turned coach, recruiter and commentator, and an all-round great person.”

The Brisbane Lions will honour Rendell tomorrow night by wearing black armbands when they take on Richmond at The Gabba.
