The Brisbane Lions have allocated 2017 guernsey numbers to those players who joined the Club via the National Draft and Rookie Draft.
Cedric Cox has inherited Simon Black’s famous number 20.
Black wore the number 20 Lions guernsey in 322 senior AFL matches – the most of any Brisbane player in history.
Following his retirement at the end of 2013, Black’s contribution to the Club was honoured by having his jumper ‘retired’ for 12 months. His name also remained on the number 20 locker throughout the entire 2014 season.
Josh Watts wore the number 20 jumper for the 2015 and 2016 seasons before being delisted in October.
Hugh McClugagge will wear the number 6 guernsey.
McCluggage takes over the number from Josh Green, who joined Essendon as a delisted free agent.
Jarrod Berry will wear the number 13 jumper, most recently worn by retired ruckman Trent West.
Fellow draftee Alex Witherden has been allocated the number 29 for next season.
Witherden’s number 29 comes with the most history considering it was worn by one of Fitzroy’s all-time greats in Garry ‘Flea’ Wilson.
Fremantle Senior Coach Ross Lyon and Graeme McKenzie are other former Fitzroy players that appear on the number 29 locker. The number was most recently worn by Jaden McGrath who called time on his AFL career in November after losing his desire to play at the elite level.
Jacob Allison will don the number 37 while Corey Lyons will wear 39.
As is customary, the four players selected by the Lions at the Rookie Draft – Mitchell Hinge (#42), Jake Barrett (#43), Oscar McInerney (#46) and Blake Grewar (#48) – all received higher numbers.
