After 166 games and a career spanning 12 years, Brisbane Lions midfielder, Brent Moloney, today announced his retirement from AFL.

After several weeks battling an achilles injury, Moloney decided to hang up his boots, effectively immediately.

2014 has been a frustrating season for the veteran, with injuries limiting the 30-year-old to just five senior games for the Club.

Originally drafted by Geelong with Pick No.4 in the 2003 Pre-Season Draft, Moloney called time on his career after 23 matches with the Cats, 122 with the Demons, and 21 games for the Lions.

Moloney, who celebrated his 150^th AFL game last year, was an AFL Rising Star nominee (2003), the recipient of the 2011 Melbourne Club Champion award and a member of the Lions 2013 NAB Cup Premiership side.

Lions General Manager, Football Operations, Dean Warren, said:

“Brent is a fantastic character and we are fortunate to have had him as part of our Lions family.

“Brent has been a great mentor for our young playing list, in particular our midfielders and will be sorely missed around the Club.

“We wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.”

Speaking exclusively to Lions TV, Moloney said he would like to be remembered as an “honest bloke” and a “good teammate.”
