Michael Voss might have held the AFL Premiership Cup aloft at the end of three separate AFL Grand Finals - but he made sure he treated each time like it would be his last.

Now as Senior Coach of the Club he once captained to three consecutive Premierships, Voss understands that success can often be fleeting.

“I remember after our first (Premiership), we quickly went into the celebration of doing our lap and I went to the players and said ‘don’t run, walk, we may never be here ever again’,” Voss said during the Brisbane Lions’ 3-Peat Anniversary launch on Thursday.

“History says we were, and we cherish every moment of those.”

Having been part of what is widely considered to be the greatest AFL team of the modern era, Voss knows that being successful doesn’t simply happen - it requires a lot of hard work and planning.

“It takes a lot of commitment, things have to be aligned…then hopefully you get a shot at it,” he said.

“We got a shot at it four times and won three of them.”

“Each of the guys has a story to tell, and they’ve all got a different story on how they got there. We were just 22 individuals who met at the same time and were able to achieve something special together.”

While he believes the ‘highs’ must be “cherished”, Voss was also philosophical about learning from the ‘lows’.

“The good times we get to celebrate, and the bad times become a memory and distinctive lesson,” he said.
