The Brisbane Lions pursuit for premiership success has received a major boost with three-time Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin joining the Club.
Cotchin, who retired at the end of last season after an illustrious 306-game career, has signed with the Lions in an off-field role as a mentor to the leadership group.
The Brownlow Medallist and All-Australian met with the playing and coaching group at training at The Gabba on Tuesday.
Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly, said securing the services of Cotchin was a significant win for the Club.
“Trent is one of the most impressive people, players and leaders not only in the AFL but sport in general, and we are thrilled to have him join us,” Daly said.
“He brings with him a wealth of invaluable experience having helped lead Richmond to three flags, and we are hopeful that will help us take the next step as a Club.
“Trent will support Leading Teams Consultant, Simon Fletcher, and work closely with him in mentoring and growing our leaderships group in their on-field development.
“We are also extremely flattered and proud that someone of Trent’s calibre and standing in the game chose our football Club as the one he wanted to work with.”
Cotchin will travel to Brisbane to meet with the leaders throughout the season, whilst also connecting remotely and attending the Club’s Melbourne-based games.
The former Tigers captain said he was thrilled to join the Brisbane Lions at an exciting time for the Club.
“I’ve always admired the consistency of the Lions and given a great relationship with Danny Daly, I was happy to explore what a relationship with the Lions could look like,” Cotchin said.
“The work that I see myself doing with the leaders is really aligned to my own purpose in helping others realise and fulfil their potential and that lights me up.”
The Brisbane Lions kick off their 2024 campaign in a history-making Opening Round clash against Carlton at The Gabba on Friday night, which has already sold out.
