DESPITE suffering their 10th loss in 12 matches on Saturday night, optimistic Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss says he could not be prouder of his team.

The Lions' 31-point defeat by Richmond was also soured by injuries to Mitch Clark (ankle) and Todd Banfield (hamstring) that will be further assessed with scans on Monday.

Voss said despite finals clearly being out of the equation - the Lions are 15th  and only percentage above the wooden spoon - there was still plenty to gain from 2011.

"We've got a lot of really good signs there," he said.

"I'm really pleased with some of the progress that we're getting from some of the younger players. How they learn to do that over four quarters is what they've got to evolve to as they get more experienced and their bodies become stronger.

"In some ways I couldn't be prouder of how they've approached each contest when there's not been a lot of reward at the end of the game."

Voss has introduced nine debutants to Lions fans this season, with Pat Karnezis the latest against the Tigers.

The 191cm utility announced himself to the AFL with two goals from his first two kicks after coming on as a substitute for Clark after half-time.

Rohan Bewick (17 disposals) was also prominent, while Mitch Golby and Josh Green were also part of Saturday's loss after making their debuts this season.

The Lions were only narrowly beaten in most areas against Richmond (disposals 330-315, clearances 32-30 and inside 50s 60-51) and Voss said they had to continue to strive for improvement.

"There's also some areas we're letting ourselves down in and we still have to have excellence in our play and we'll keep looking for that absolute perfect game," he said.

"We have to make sure we keep putting our heads down. It's amazing when you keep doing that and you prepare really well, you get everything right during the week, you show some little improvements in different areas, how all of a sudden it can come together quite quickly."
