Exciting young forward Kai Lohmann has signed a two-year contract extension to give the Brisbane Lions a huge boost weeks out from kicking off 2025.
Lohmann, already contracted for the season ahead, will now remain at Brighton Homes Arena until at least the end of 2027.
The 21-year-old is fresh off a breakout-year where he kicked 36 goals from 27 games, four of those coming in a pivotal Grand Final performance.
It’s the second time since being drafted in 2021 that the former Maryborough and Ballarat local resisted the urge to return home Victoria by re-committing to the Lions.
Despite being grateful and full of love for his family and friends down south, the Premiership Lion said it was an easy decision to stay in Brisbane.
“It feels amazing to be re-signing with the Lions and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to stay with such a great Club,” Lohmann said.
“I feel like I’m part of a big family rather than a football club. I love everything about this Club, which is why I re-signed, it’s not just because of one person or one thing.
“I love going into the Club everyday as I feel like it’s somewhere I can truly be myself.
“There is also a lot for the Club to look forward to over the next few years, so I am really excited I will be here to see what we can achieve.”
The high-flying goalkicker became a Premiership player in just his third season, despite having only played only a total of eight matches in his first two years.
Lohmann did so with the help of completing an apprenticeship alongside some of the game’s best forwards in Joe Daniher, Charlie Cameron and Lincoln McCarthy.
Now with a taste of the ultimate success and an understanding of what is expected at AFL level, the former Greater Western Victoria Rebel is hungry for more.
“I had some great moments last year, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the support around me both in and out of the Club,” Lohmann said.
“I am really excited to continue improving and working to get the best out of myself and my teammates every day.
“I am obsessed with trying to get better and personally I want to contribute as much as I can to helping the team and the club be successful.
“We have a very special group here and I hope we can achieve a lot of success together in the next few years.”
Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly said the Club was thrilled to have Lohmann extend his contract.
“Kai has shown plenty of promise in his first three seasons with us and his finals campaign last year was very exciting to watch,” Daly said.
“There’s no questioning his natural talent and flare. The challenge for Kai now is to keep working hard and keep building on last year and we are confident he will do so.
“One of the first things Kai’s coaches and teammates comment on is his eagerness to keep learning and to do whatever he can do to become the best player he can.
“We as a Club are very proud of not only the player Kai is developing into, but also the quality person he is which is a real credit to him and his family.”
