The rise of Redden
Among the great players in the AFL are those who are household names; whose dazzling form on the field transforms them into AFL icons.
Just as great are those players who are perhaps not as high-profile - who aren’t big talkers or natural media performers, but whose work rate and skillset are second to none.
Jack Redden is the perfect example of the latter - for this South Australian midfielder, actions speak louder than words.
Since arriving at the Lions in 2008, Redden has earned the praise of his coaches and peers for his ‘quiet achiever’ attitude and consistent results.
He became a shining light of the Lions midfield in 2011, finishing in the top five in disposals, marks and contested possessions, and leading the Club in tackles and Dream Team points.
His career-best form this season saw him claim his second consecutive top 5 finish in the Merrett-Murray Medal count, and take the Alastair Lynch Trophy for Club Champion third place.
Redden was, as usual, a man of few words when accepting his trophy.
“It’s a great honour to win this award. Well done to Tom Rockliff for winning the medal and well done to Simon Black,” Redden said.
“I’d like to thank the Club who have been great to me ever since I arrived here.”
Redden echoed the sentiments of his fellow award-winners on the night - that he was excited for the near future with the Brisbane Lions.
“I’m really looking forward to the future, and hopefully we’ll have some success down the road.”
“The Club’s in good hands and I think the ship’s steering in the right direction.”
