The Brisbane Lions have selected Sam Marshall to make his AFL debut in its sold-out Easter Thursday blockbuster with Collingwood at the Gabba.

Marshall, selected as a hybrid midfielder with Pick 25 at the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft, is yet another graduate of the Youi Brisbane Lions Academy.

The 19-year-old Sunshine Coast local impressed with his running ability and work ethic on the training track throughout the pre-season.

Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly said he was thrilled for Marshall to get his opportunity at AFL level.

“This is the moment that every kid dreams of and it is a really special moment for him and family to share,” Daly said.

“The reasons why he is making his debut are the same reasons why we drafted him - which are his work ethic, his running ability and talent.

“What makes Sam’s debut even more special for us is that he is another homegrown Queensland local that came through the Youi Brisbane Lions Academy.”

Marshall was told by coach Chris Fagan in front of his teammates at training on Wednesday that he would be playing against Collingwood.

“You’ve worked hard for this all summer, and we know what talent you’ve got,” Fagan said in his speech.

“You are a very self-driven young man, you don’t say much, but I think you’re self-driven which I see just by your actions.”

Knowing the former Kawana Park junior is a humble and quietly spoken teenager, Fagan tried to put Marshall at ease by with a joke.

“I know you are feeling completely uncomfortable at the moment standing up here in front of the group,” the Lions coach said.

“But mate the pressure is on – you’ve got to say something, and you only get once chance at your first game so make sure you make a good speech.”

True to form, Marshall kept his speech short and sweet, though is one who lets his actions do the talking, as highlighted by Fagan.

While Thursday night is a huge night for Marshall to make his debut, the young midfielder is no stranger to big occasions.

Marshall was pivotal for the Sandringham Dragons in their Coates Talent League premiership win last season.

Alongside fellow draftee and Lions teammate Levi Ashcroft, Marshall racked up 28 touches, seven inside 50s and two goals to claim the best on ground medal.

“Firstly, thanks to Fages (Fagan), DD (Danny Daly) and the coaches for the opportunity I really appreciate it,” Marshall said.

“And I am really looking forward to playing with you boys, so cheers.”

The Brisbane Lions will name their final team at 6:20pm AEST tonight.
