Ash McGrath broke a long-standing Club record in the final match of 2013, when he booted six goals in the team’s nail-biting loss to Geelong at Simonds Stadium.
McGrath’s individual haul wasn’t only the greatest by any Lions player this season, but also set a new record for most goals kicked at the Geelong venue.
Before Round 23, no player in the Lions’ merged history had kicked more than four goals in a match at Kardinia Park.
McGrath had four goals up by the five minute mark of the third term, and added a further couple in the frenetic finish.
In doing so, he moved ahead of players such as new coach Justin Leppitsch, Daniel Bradshaw, Jonathan Brown, Jason Akermanis and Craig McRae who had all previously produced bags of four goals at the stadium.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Brown made further inroads to becoming the Club’s all-time greatest ever goal-kicker.
Brown has already kicked the most goals of any Brisbane player in history, and took his career tally to 573 goals in 2013 after leading his team’s goal-kicking for a record fifth time.
He is now just four goals shy of moving into outright third position on the Club’s all-time list ahead of Fitzroy champion and Lions Hall of Famer Bernie Quinlan (576 goals).
Should Brown play on in 2014, he would not only surpass Quinlan’s total, but also give himself a chance of potentially reaching the Club’s two greatest-ever goal-kickers – Jack Moriarty (626 goals) and Alastair Lynch (633 goals).
Realistically, Brown might need to play a further two seasons to kick the 60 goals required to equal Lynch.
But should his body hold up, it’s definitely achievable.
