Oldest Lions member turns 106
The Brisbane Lions celebrated the birthday of its oldest member on Monday when Melbourne-based May Rush turned 106.
Rush has been a long-time supporter of the Club, who first started following Fitzroy after moving to Bendigo at the age of 14.
She has lived through seven Club Premierships (1913, 1916, 1922, 1944, 2001, 2002 and 2003), and even attended each of the recent three-peat successes despite being well into her nineties.
Age seems no barrier for Rush, who remains very active and keeps a busy social calendar - particular around her birthday.
“I have been very busy,” Rush told lions.com.au.
“On Sunday I went to a birthday luncheon with 22 people at a restaurant in Black Rock, and we all ate crayfish.”
“I had lunch at a Chinese restaurant in Highett on Saturday, and on Monday caught up with friends in St Kilda.”
“So I’ve cake coming out of my ears,” she said.
“I also go to bingo twice a week.”
Rush received a signed birthday card in the mail from the Lions players, while one of her friends surprised her with a framed photo of her and Senior Coach Michael Voss taken during a special post-match visit to the Club’s change rooms last season.
“The photo was taken on my friend’s phone and now I have a wonderful enlargement of it.”
“It was great (to visit the rooms). Michael Voss walked up and I told him that I’m May Rush, your oldest member. I think he was quite surprised.”
Rush has already ‘Answered to the Call’ by signing up as a member for 2012 and is planning to get along to some of the Melbourne matches this season.
“I received my membership ticket back in the mail yesterday,” she said.
“I can’t attend all the matches, but I get to them when I can. I mostly go to the ones at Etihad Stadium - there’s too much walking at the MCG.”
The recently-turned 106 year-old said she was also excited to see Lions Captain Jonathan Brown back on track after his unfortunate injuries from 2011.
“I saw him on TV the other night, and his face looks the same now as it did before.”
“We need him to stay on the field if we’re going to win some more matches.”
The entire Brisbane Lions AFC extends its best wishes to May Rush on her remarkable milestone.
