Ooh Aah Ash McGrath
What are some of the better nicknames that players have at the Club?
Luke from Upper Mt Gravatt (QLD)
Hi Luke. I wouldn’t take offence to any sort of ‘snub’ by the boys after the game.
When we win a game, the guys basically go all over the shop and try to thank the fans in the crowd. We don’t think too much about where to go.
But I’ll try my best to send some recognition your way in the future.
Hey Ash, I heard that youngster Tom Rockliff's nickname is 'the wiz'. Did he give that nickname to himself?
Donald from Sydney (NSW)
Yeah, he made that name up because he thinks he’s a wizard out on the field.
We have a few other nicknames for him, but none that I could probably publish on our website.
Hey Ash, at training, do the guys who practice goal-kicking from set shots use someone one the mark? It sometimes appears to me that when a player is kicking for goal from a set position they get too close to the mark.
Perry from Albany Creek (QLD)
Yeah, all the forwards usually go out and practice shots after training. They have competitions against each other to see who can kick the most goals.
They definitely stand on each others mark and try to put each other off as much as possible. I guess it’s good practice for what you experience during games from the opposition.
Do any of the guys follow EPL (English Premier League). I read the player questionnaires on the website and it seems about five or six players barrack for Liverpool.
Joel from Perth (WA)
A few boys are really into the EPL - particularly Justin Sherman and Luke Power.
I’m a Liverpool fan myself but I’m not massively into soccer. I just get involved in the online fantasy competitions and start some banter among the boys.
I was just wondering if you football players ever make friends with people from different sports?
Xavier from Mornington (VIC)
Not really Xavier. We might see each other at functions every now and then, but training schedules are so full on that we don’t get a lot of time to hang out with them.
G’Day again Ash. Regarding a good haircutting professional, I'm a cabby at the moment and found Phil in Kent Street, Hamilton. He's the best one I've come across. He's also a Lions fan :)
Ricky from Heritage Park (QLD)
Thanks Ricky, I’ll try and get out there and see what it’s like.
Hi Ash. What are some of the better nicknames that players have at the Club?
Tom from Golden Grove (SA)
There aren’t too many really good nicknames at the Club. They are mostly ones like Browny and Blacky which really aren’t that creative.
I reckon one of the best is Troy Selwood’s. We call him ‘Bunno’ which is short for Bunnings because they ‘sell wood’.
I've have just got hit with an injury and will be out of action for a few weeks. Is it hard being injured? How do people at the Club deal with being injured? Do they get put on a special program?
Liam from Kenmore Hills (QLD)
It really depends on the injury.
If you have surgery or undergo a knee reconstruction, our strength and conditioning guys put you on a long-term rehabilitation program.
But if it’s something minor that might only take a few weeks, you just have to be sure to get regular treatment from the physios. However, if you’re not careful with your recovery from a minor injury, it can sometimes take a lot longer than expected.
Please pass on our congratulations to the boys after a sensational win last weekend against the Doggies. We travelled from Melbourne for the big game and it is awesome to have the majority of supporters following the Lions. But when you get to Melbourne this week know that we barrack the loudest we can for you guys. GO LIONS!!!
Sue from St Helena (VIC)
Thanks Sue, will do.
It will be good to get down to Melbourne for the first time this year and play in front of our Victorian members. It will also be our only game for the year at the MCG, so the boys are looking forward to it.
Hey Ash, what were you getting at with the ‘W’ symbol you flashed at the camera from the crowd during last Saturday night’s game? And what's the prognosis on Harwood's ankle?
Bob from Alderley (QLD)
Ryan Harwood is okay. He seems to be walking around fine. Might be a week or two away though.
As for the ‘W’ on TV, it is from the Western Front football show over in Perth. You see heaps of people doing it during games over at Subiaco because the show gives out prizes to people they see giving the ‘W’ to the cameras.
Some of my mates said I should try and do it when I had the chance. I tried it on Saturday night when the cameras were spotting Blacky in the crowd and actually ended up winning this week’s prize pack.
It’s something most West Australian people would know pretty well.
