Essendon made a strong start to the season blitzing Hawthorn to record a 25-point victory at the MCG last Saturday.
After a disappointing finish to the 2016 AFL season, which saw the Bombers finish at the bottom of the ladder, the team were determined for a strong come-back and surprised many by running the Hawks off their legs.
Essendon's No.1 pick at the 2016 NAB AFL Draft, Andrew McGrath made an impressive debut, picking up 22 possessions, 5 tackles and 6 marks. McGrath’s composure and decision-making proved just as inspiring as his numbers.
Captain Dyson Heppell was instrumental in Essendon’s first win for the season recording 34 possessions and earning a nomination for Goal of the Year after a strong game up forward, securing three goals.
“I’ve been doing a bit with the forwards over the pre-season and it’s good to spend a bit of time down there and get on the scoreboard.” said Heppell.
Injury Watch
Last night, essendonfc.com.au revealed that former Lion Josh Green will have to wait to play his former side after being ruled out of this weekend's clash with a hamstring injury.
The 24-year-old played in the new look forward line however felt some tightness in the final quarter with scans confirming he will be out for 2 weeks.
"There is no real muscle fibre disruption which is a good thing but the bad news for 'Greeny' is he won't be available against Brisbane," Bombers High Performance Manager Justin Crow told BomberTV.
Lions Health Centre: Injury List
Mark Baguley went off to have his ankle assessed in the final quarter on Round 1. However, Essendon is confident that there is nothing to be concern about.
Matthew Leuenberger (hamstring) and David Myers (finger) are not expected to return for Round 2, following injuries throughout the 2017 preseason.
Jayden Laverde (ankle) will be sidelined for what the club is targeting to be a mid-season return. Jordan Ridley (back) continues to recover and has been making progress in the gym.
