Brisbane Lions Women's Coach Craig Starcevich witnessed Yeronga South-Brisbane defeat Coorparoo in a thrilling QWAFL Grand Final yesterday afternoon, as players from both sides proposed their case for AFLW selection.

10 spots are up for grabs in the Lions’ AFLW team and Starcevich said at least six players’ performances yesterday proved they are worthy of consideration.

“I guess yesterday gives us the best guide as to who can stand up in an AFLW game,” he said.

“The girls that can handle the heat in a QWAFL grand final should handle the pressure of the AFLW.”

The Kings led for most of the match, until a fourth-quarter four-goal haul by the Devils ensured they would win the silverware.

Yeronga’s Emily Bates, the inaugural winner of the Lions’ AFLW Best and Fairest, was again at her brilliant best. Her leadership, coupled with 29 disposals, got her side back in the game and was deservedly rewarded as best on ground.

Starcevich was impressed with her performance, but was equally pleased with his Lions’ and Kings player Ally Anderson, who had 25 disposals to her name.

“Ally has taken her game to a whole new level,” he said. 

Anderson’s fitness and defensive efforts have both improved and he’s excited to see what she will bring next season.

Meanwhile, fellow Lions’ AFLW players Emma Zielke, Jessica Wuestchner and Brittany Gibson were all strong for the Kings.  

Kate McCarthy kicked two goals for the winning side, Sabrina Frederick-Traub had one and Samantha Virgo was classy in defence for Yeronga.  

But the afternoon was the perfect combination of glory and utter heartbreak for Virgo. 

With only minutes remaining, she was stretchered off with an injury to her right knee.  

Starcevich and Brisbane Lions Women's CEO Breeanna Brock are sweating on scans taking place today.

The injury has robbed Virgo of her opportunity to play for the Allies in the AFLW State of Origin this weekend in Melbourne. 

Seven of her Lions AFLW teammates will take to the field, with Starcevich to travel with them.

The Allies take on Victoria on Saturday, September 2, at 7:40pm at Etihad Stadium.

The game will be broadcast on Channel Seven and Fox Footy.

The second AFLW draft takes place on October 18th.
