Individually, there have been numerous impressive performances from Brisbane Lions players over the first ten rounds of the season. While most of the team has improved statistically this season, six players in particular have stood out and are detailed below.
It comes as no surprise that Dayne Zorko is racking up huge numbers to start the season. Zorko is currently averaging 564 metres gained per match, well up on his average of 440 in 2016.
The current Lions best and fairest is also gathering 11 contested possessions per game, which is slightly higher than his 8.8 possessions per game in 2016.
Sam Mayes has also been a big improver, collecting almost two more contested possessions per game compared to 2016, while also averaging nearly 50 metres more gained per match as well.
The numbers back up Tom Rockliff’s phenomenal start to the season, with the classy midfielder averaging almost 10 clearances a match – the highest in the AFL - compared to 5.4 a match in 2016.
Rockliff is also up on average contested possessions (15.1 v 11.8) and average tackles (8.2 v 6.9).
In his fourth season at the Lions, Lewis Taylor has been impressive playing across the half-forward flank. Taylor has improved his average contested possessions (5.7 v 4.1), average metres gained (287.7 v 183.6) and his average score involvements (5.4 v 4.7).
Currently the Lions’ leading goal scorer, alongside Zorko with 14 majors, young forward Eric Hipwood has been the key target up front this season. Hipwood has improved his scoring accuracy immensely, currently sitting at 70% compared to 40.7% in 2016.
Back down the other end of the field, Darcy Gardiner has been a key figure in the Lions’ backline. Gardiner has already made 49 spoils this season, well ahead of the 34 spoils he had at this stage last year. Gardiner has also made a 5% improvement to his average disposal efficiency.
