Brisbane Lions AFLW defender Leah Kasler has been overwhelmed by the response she’s received since the introduction of the women’s’ competition earlier this year.
This will only be furthered when she runs out for the Allies’ in tomorrow night’s AFLW State of Origin against Victoria at Etihad Stadium.
A proud Queenslander, Kasler wants to make a statement against the Victoria powerhouse side.
“As a state, we weren’t well-known for football,” she said.
That all changed after the introduction of the AFLW when her Lions side stunned the football world to finish unbeaten on top of the ladder in the maiden season.
It changed the landscape and perception of football in Queensland and now aspiring players seek out her advice.
“Coming up to you saying I didn’t think I could do it, then I saw you play and thought maybe I could. Now I’m in a team, I’ve made friends and I’m loving it,” she says.
Her QWAFL season with Coollongatta Tweed has just finished and this season she took on a teaching and mentoring role for players coming through.
“It’s really enjoyable to play in the local league because you can pass on your knowledge and experience,” she said.
Tomorrow night, she returns to elite football and has heard that Melbourne is abuzz in anticipation of the inaugural match.
“I’m excited, it’s going to be intense.”
Kasler can’t wait to join up with her AFLW Lions teammates again but admits it will be strange joining forces Adelaide Crows players and coaching staff, after they broke their hearts in the Grand Final earlier this year.
