Dan McStay enjoyed one of his most consistent years at the Lions to date after six seasons in the Den. In 2019 he played all 24 games, including the Lions two AFL Finals Series games, which provided him his first taste of September action.
The previous year McStay had to fight his way into the senior side at the start of the season, before solidifying his spot in the team.
In previous seasons at the Lions McStay had swung between the forward and backline but in 2019 after kicking 21 goals in the year, he established himself as a tall forward.
His three goal, five tackle performance against the Adelaide Crows was amongst his finest for the year.
However, McStay is credited for his selfless team acts, that are not reflected in a statistical sense. Most games he is creating space for his teammates in the forward line by either blocking or creating leads
He played his 100th game against Geelong in Round 23 and extended his contract with the Lions to remain in the Den until at least the end of 2022.
Speaking to media after the news of his contract extension McStay said his decision to remain at the Club was easy.
“I’m really confident of where the future of this team is going,” he said.
“I think the big thing for us is that we’re like a family.”
