The re-born Bombers produced a large number of ‘miracle’ goals early in the game to get their tails up and then finished full of running to post a 27.11 (173) to 18.13 (121) victory over the Lions.
The visitors again went into an AFLQ Velocity Sports Cup clash without a recognised ruckman with Joel Tippett held back another week with his back problem.
It left Matt Tyler and Aaron Cornelius to ruck against former Melbourne club champion Jeff White and former Mt Gravatt premiership player Jarrod Grimm, who controlled the hit-outs.
Redland simply could not miss when shooting at goal from acute angles in the opening term, posting eight goals straight, while the Lions stayed in the contest with 5.4.
Notting was particularly lively as he worked hard to find space at centre-half-back, while Rockliff and Jack Redden won their share of ball.
Redland centreman Shane Huy dominated the clearances for much of the first half, but the Lions hit back in time-on of the second quarter to bring a six-goal deficit back to 21 points.
Hooper made a slow start to the game but found his feet in the second half, kicking two class goals in the third term as the Lions again brought a 37-point deficit back to 19 points.
Jason Roe gave the visitors a lift in the ruck after holding Jason Eagle in the early stages of the term after the Bombers had launched a five goal blitz in the 35 minutes before halftime.
Young top-up player Sean Yoshiura did some good things at half-back after having been lively early across the middle and the Lions looked capable of being right back in the game by the final change.
However the Bombers’ young Tasmanian recruit James Charlesworth and local Redland junior Matt Thomson dominated the time-on period and helped the margin back out to 37 points.
The opening 13 minutes of the final term was a nightmare for the Lions as the home side rattled on six unanswered goals, with Phil Carse dominating the middle.
Brisbane steadied from that point and brought the margin back to 52 points at the finish, with Hooper, Rockliff and Yoshiura doing some more good things.
Hooper finished with four goals and spent plenty of time on the bench as part of his return from a month out with injury, while Notting was effective for most of the game.
James Hawksley was a good link man for the Lions while Daniel Dzufer tried hard against the odds in defence.
White, 32, played with great enthusiasm and skill for the Bombers in his first year at the club, while highly regarded one-time Redland junior Adam Mueller continued his outstanding form at centre-half-forward.
The loss dropped the Lions to fifth place, and they have played one more game than the teams around them.
Fielding 13 listed players yesterday, they are hoping to steady the ship back at the Gabba on Saturday against Labrador.
