19-year-old Rhys Mathieson took the first step in his AFL journey when he lined up for the Lions in their opening NAB Challenge clash with the Gold Coast Suns at Burpengary.
Impressing over the pre-season with his competitiveness, Mathieson was fearless around the contest on Sunday.
He had 13 disposals (seven of those were contested) and kicked a superb banana goal from the forward pocket.
“(The) conditions here today were tough,” Mathieson told LionsTV following the match.
“We struggled a bit trying to get it back through the middle, (but) all in all the boys had a good crack (at it) and it was good to run that one over the line.”
Watch: Mathieson pushing for early selection
Mathieson played as a fifth moving through the midfield and half forward.
“They’re (opposition) going to obviously be a bit stronger (than me) having been in the system for a few more years.
“The likes of Mitch Robinson and Ryan Lester around the contest really helped me out.
“You don’t really feel undermanned or out-muscled when those two are around the contest talking to you.”
Mathieson’s first senior goal had the Lions up by one point at quarter time and his brilliant effort was matched by an equally good celebration.
“I was looking to go back to the middle but the boys said to take the shot. I just sort of thought my way through it,” Mathieson said.
“The celebration was just having a bit of fun and giving the fans something to look forward to this year.”
