Brisbane is out to avoid a repeat of last season's final round shocker by playing a "bold" brand of football against West Coast on Sunday, says skipper Dayne Zorko.

In what was essentially a wooden-spoon playoff in Round 23 last year, the Lions lost to North Melbourne by 51 points at the Gabba.

This time around they have the chance to upset the Eagles, who fly east desperate to win and clinch the second spot.

Zorko said the Lions had spoken extensively about last year's finish in the same round.

"We had a similar opportunity against North Melbourne and we came out and just expected it to happen," Zorko said on Friday morning.

"We had a win two weeks before that, confidence was sky-high and our attitude was as if it was just going to happen.

"We've reviewed that really strongly internally this week. I'm expecting a really bold showing from the boys."

Following a week that included a narrow win against arch-rival Gold Coast and the re-signing of coach Chris Fagan until the end of 2021, Zorko said it was vital to reward Brisbane's fans with a strong showing.

Despite winning just two of their 10 matches at the Gabba, the Lions have been ultra-competitive at their home ground, losing to North Melbourne, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Collingwood by seven points or less.

Zorko said Fagan's two-year extension was a just reward for a coach that had helped change the Lions' fortunes since taking over from Justin Leppitsch at the end of 2016.

"Fages did a really long apprenticeship at Hawthorn and Melbourne, he was in the game a really long time overseeing things, and I think it's the relationship side of things Fages has brought," he said.

"He's instilled a lot of confidence in us to go out and do what we can do, what we got drafted to do. I think the boys have fed off that confidence that he's been able to provide us by building those relationships.

"We're playing a really consistent brand of football. That's on the back of Fages great work."
