Promising key-defender Sam Skinner has re-signed with the Brisbane Lions until at least the end of 2018.

Skinner joins fellow 2015 NAB AFL Draftee Eric Hipwood in inking a new deal despite a year still to run on his contract.

Skinner was drafted from Gippsland Power at pick No. 47 and at 197cm his versatility allows him to not only impact as a key defender but also forward and in the ruck.

He played two matches at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging nine possessions and 4.5 tackles, before injuring his knee (ACL reconstruction) playing for Vic Country – ending his 2015 season.

Skinner is now in the final stages of his rehabilitation with the 18-year-old on track for a return to football in June.

"We’ve been exceptionally impressed with Sam’s dedication and enthusiasm as he begins his AFL journey," said Brisbane Lions General Manager of Football Matthew Francis.

“Despite arriving at the Club injured, in his first season he has shown outstanding professionalism, character and commitment to building a career in the AFL.

“We see this extension as just reward for his effort.”
