'Bulldog' in Black's sights
Lions Legend Kevin ‘Bulldog’ Murray says he is confident that Simon Black can break his long-standing Club record of 333 games
Black, who has currently played 314 senior games, penned a new deal with the Lions on Thursday which will see him extend his career into a remarkable 16th season.
Watch Simon Black speak about his re-signing with the Club
He currently sits third on the Club’s all-time games tally, behind former Premiership teammate Marcus Ashcroft (318 games) and Murray (333 games).
Murray told lions.com.au on Friday that Black’s supreme durability throughout his career should see him play the 20 games required to break the record.
“He is a moral to get there because he’s Mr. Consistency,” Murray said.
“He is just an ornament to the game, and to be able to play on for a 16th season is an amazing performance. I wish him all the luck in the world next year.”
“And the way he’s going, there’s no reason why he can’t keep going beyond 2013.”
Murray himself played 16 seasons in two stints with Fitzroy - from 1955-64 and 1967-72 - and even held the VFL games record for a short while.
“Records are made to be broken,” Murray said.
“I broke the VFL games record back in 1974, and then former South Melbourne player John Rantall broke it again a few years later with Fitzroy.”
Black currently sits 35th on the complete VFL/AFL games list, but could elevate himself 17 places if he plays 22 matches in 2013.
Should Black reach Murray’s milestone, it will be a fitting honour for the Club’s most decorated player who will eventually be regarded as a ‘Legend’ himself among future Lions generations.
