The strong form of the youth brigade led by Eric Hipwood, Rhys Mathieson and Jarrad Jansen provided a silver lining to another loss for the Brisbane Lions at the MCG.
After kicking the game's opening two goals, the Lions never threatened Richmond who cruised to a 42-point win on the back of big games from Tiger stars Dustin Martin and Jack Reiwoldt.
The Lions, wearing their Fitzroy heritage jumper to mark the Club's sellout Hall Of Fame function tonight in Melbourne, showed some fight late in the game to win the closing term 5.6 to 3.4 but it was too little, too late after Richmond had outworked and outclassed them for the majority of the game.
Hipwood, a product of the Hyundai Help For Kids Lions Academy in just his second AFL game, showed plenty to kick three goals, two behinds, while Mathieson and Jansen got through a mountain of work on the stage of the MCG.
Some great running from the @brisbanelions' midfield and a beautiful snap from @EricHipwood to complete the play. https://t.co/uaG2Fz4ZzF

Mathieson had 24 disposals including 14 contest possessions, and seven tackles, while 13 of Jansen's 16 possessions were contested in addition to six clearances and a goal.
Sam Mayes (27 disposals and eight rebound 50s), Lewy Taylor (2 goals), Dan McStay, Josh Schache and Harris Andrews (a game-high eight 1%ers) all played their part, while debutant Matt Hammelmann had 10 disposals and five marks in a solid debut.
Of the senior players, skipper Tom Rockliff led from the front with 30 disposals and nine tackles.
The Lions, even though outplayed across the field, were not helped by the loss of in-form Mitch Robinson to concussion early in the second quarter. The match had been billed as a battle between Martin and Robinson, who has taken some notable midfield scalps in recent weeks.
But that fight was over early in the second quarter when Robinson left the field with concussion after a clash with Tigers hard-nut Jacob Townsend, ending his day.
The Lions - who went into the game without prime movers Dayne Beams, Allen Christensen, Dayne Zorko and Tom Bell - started in a flurry in the opening 10 minutes, targeting opposition skipper Trent Cotchin off the ball and kicking the opening two goals.
Their skills quickly deteriorated, however, as the Tigers slammed on the next five goals to build a 21-point lead at quarter-time.
The trend for the match was set for the next two quarters as Richmond did as it pleased, building and building its lead to a match-high 56 points at the final change.
But they took their foot off the pedal and let the Lions control play in the final term, the visitors winning the final term by 14 points.
