The Brisbane Lions have secured exciting on-baller Rhys Mathieson until at least the end of 2019.
Mathieson, who was already contracted until the end of 2017, moved early to sign a new two year deal. The Lions pounced on the Geelong Falcons product (pick 39) at last year’s draft with the 19-year-old touted as one of the best inside midfielders in last year's intake.
At 185cm and 79kg, Mathieson is a good size for a midfielder who not only hunts the ball, but can fly for a mark, contest in the air and kick goals.
Mathieson averaged 25 disposals a game at TAC Cup level and 20 during the national under-18 championships.
He featured in the Lions' NAB Challenge side, but suffered a broken cheekbone after receiving a high bump from GWS forward Jeremy Cameron in the pre-season competition.
Mathieson required surgery and recently returned to the NEAFL. His form has been strong since his return with the Victorian named as one of the Lions' emergencies for Saturday night's clash with Collingwood.
"We’re really excited to extend Rhys’ contract, adding to our already strong midfield depth" said Brisbane Lions National Talent Manager Peter Schwab.
“After the draft we thought we were really fortunate to get Rhys as late as we did – he’s an exciting young player with a real ability to win the football.
“He’s already shown us some glimpses of his ability in the NAB Challenge and we look forward to him playing many senior games for us.
“Rhys is also great to have around the Club, his positive attitude really helping him to fit into the culture of our Club.”
Mathieson is the 15th Brisbane Lions player to re-sign with the Club since the end of 2015.
