Mother nature ran its course on Sunday when the Brisbane Lions were sidelined by torrential rain in Mackay.
“It was obviously a disappointing result for everyone involved,” Senior Assistant Coach Daly told LionsTV for the Vero Coaches Wrap.
“Not only for the players who were wanting to get a game under their belts but also the people of Mackay who have put a lot of work into it over the past probably six months.
“Ideally we want them to have two games before the seasons started but unfortunately mother nature took its toll.”
The playing group completed a running and gym session on Monday and will use an 80-90 minute main training session on Wednesday to prepare for their match against GWS on Sunday.
Captain Tom Rockliff along with Pearce Hanley, Stefan Martin, Daniel Rich and Dayne Zorko were all named to play against the Saints and Daly said all will play in the Club’s final pre-season hit-out on Sunday.
“We’ll play our best side against GWS.”
The side may also be strengthened by the return of defender Claye Beams (knee) who played in the Lions’ Reserves on Sunday.
“One positive out of the weekend was that our NEAFL boys got to have a hit-out.
“Claye had a reasonable game. He did quite a good job and could be one to put his hand up this week.”
Nick Robertson missed out on a spot in the Lions’ travelling 24 to play the Saints but Daly said his performance against Southport could put him in line for a senior call up.
“Robbo showed a bit of form again back in the NEAFL.”
Daly added that Sunday’s match would be important to finalising the systems they had put in place over the summer along with adjusting to the AFL’s cap on rotations for 2016.
“We’ll need to look at the 90-man rotation and get as close to that as possible leading into round one.
“That will be a big one for us in terms of players being able to play forward, back and in the midfield rather than coming off the ground.”
