The Brisbane Lions’ ability to score heavily in short bursts has directly contributed towards at least two of the team’s wins over the past month.
The Lions booted 10 of the last 11 goals against Geelong on their way to a record-breaking comeback in Round 13, and then stunned North Melbourne last Saturday night by kicking 10 goals to the Roos’ three from late in the third quarter.
While such performances have made for exciting finishes at the Gabba, there’s no doubt Senior Coach Michael Voss would rather his team produce a more consistent four-quarter effort.
Quite remarkably, the Lions have claimed victory from three of their past four matches despite having won only six quarters at a success rate of just 37.5%.
The statistic becomes even more alarming if you go back further.
Since the Lions produced arguably their best four-quarter effort against Essendon back in Round 8 at Etihad Stadium, the team has won just nine of their past 28 quarters of football.
Throughout the season so far, the Lions have won 21 quarters – four less than cross-town rivals the Gold Coast Suns who sit one win below them on the AFL ladder.
It’s no surprise that the Lions have performed best in fourth quarters this season.
In fact, they sit eighth in the AFL for most fourth quarters won – ahead of flag fancies Sydney and Collingwood – and have kicked more goals in the final term (52) than any other this season.
However, the Lions are just as notorious for their slow starts as they are for their fast finishes, having won just three first quarters so far this season – the equal lowest in the AFL.
They currently rank 16th in the AFL for total points scored in first quarters, narrowly ahead of Greater Western Sydney and Melbourne.
