Brisbane Lions defender Matt Maguire will miss this Saturday evening's clash with North Melbourne after being cited by the AFL Match Review Panel on Monday.

Maguire was charged with a Level One Tripping Offence (80 demerit points, reprimand) for tripping Essendon forward Joe Daniher during the third quarter of last Saturday night's match at the Gabba.

In summary, due to his carry-over demerit points from a previous offence, his reprimand is increased to a one-match sanction, even with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand.

He has an existing bad record of 93.75 demerit points within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 173.75 points and a one-match sanction. However, an early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 130.31 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

Maguire and the Lions decided against contesting the charge, meaning the key defender will be unavailable for selection.

It's an unfortunate blow for the 29-year-old, who played his first senior match of 2014 against the Bombers last Saturday.
