A one-sided final quarter ultimately proved the difference on Saturday afternoon, as NEAFL heavyweights Southport defeated the Brisbane Lions Reserves by 33 points at H&A Oval on the Gold Coast.

Just one point separated the two sides at the final break, before Southport piled on six goals to one in a frenetic final term to win 12.11 (83) to 7.8 (50).

Despite being in the contest for most of the afternoon, Development Coach Mitch Hahn said the Lions were simply outplayed by the third-placed Sharks.

“Across the whole day Southport probably played with a bit more enthusiasm and spirit than us,” Hahn told lions.com.au.

“We started slowly and just didn’t play the way we wanted to. The inside 50s were 32-52 for the game in Southport’s favour.

“We fielded a strong team with 17 listed players, so we had no excuses. Southport just outplayed us on the day.”

Please find below Mitch Hahn’s appraisal on each of the listed Lions who played against the Sharks on Saturday.

Ryan Harwood

He provided us with some good run off half back. Had 27 possessions and was one of the few blokes who used the ball well. Still needs to work a bit on his defensive side of the game.

Brent Moloney

Brent’s had limited game time in the past month, so needed to get a bit of touch back in the midfield. He had 16 possessions, but only six were contested – and that’s generally a strength of his.

Jack Crisp

He was our carry-over player, so we pulled him at half time in case he was needed in the seniors. He started to build into the game, and we definitely missed his run and carry in second half.

Rohan Bewick

He worked hard with 24 possession and a couple of goals, playing mainly as an inside midfielder. He showed some improvement, he just needs to get some more consistency in his game.

Claye Beams

We didn’t have huge expectations on Claye given his recent run with injury. We just wanted him to get out there and enjoy playing footy again. He really dug in and ended up with 22 possessions. He’ll be better for the run, but will probably need a couple more NEAFL games under his belt before we rush him back into the seniors. He hopefully has a long career ahead of him, so we need to make sure we look after him and set him up to succeed.

Jordan Lisle

Jordy has been really good for us all year, but was a bit sluggish last weekend and fumbled marks that he’d usually take. He still had good numbers – including 24 possessions and 12 marks – we just need him to get involved a bit more and continue to provide great leadership.

Daniel McStay

Daniel was one of the boys we moved around. We shifted him forward to help with his development, and let him see what other backs do to forwards. We only had 32 inside 50s, so his opportunities were limited, but he showed signs that he can certainly play there and understand the role. He still needs to work on running hard both ways.

James Polkinghorne

Had a solid game. He played in the midfield and up forward, and finished with 18 possessions and three goals. What we saw this week was an attack on the football and the contest. We just need him to play with that same level of attack consistently, so he can take it to the senior level when he gets his next chance.

Michael Close

As I mentioned earlier, it was a tough day for our forwards, but Closey managed to take seven marks – including four contested – which was pleasing. It shows that he’s learning to engage, separate and take strong contested marks. He just needs to continue to make the most of his opportunities. He finished with two behinds, which hurts him. Had it been two goals, it would have been a much better day.

Jonathan Freeman

Jonno played down back, basically swapping roles with Dan McStay. It was a good learning opportunity for him, as it teaches him how defenders play, which can hopefully benefit him as a forward in the long run. His first half was really slow, but after half time he started to attack the footy and provide some run. He can take some momentum and confidence into this week knowing he can play in a different position.

Isaac Conway

Isaac played on wing and across half-forward – he was another we moved around a bit. It probably wasn’t his best day, and he didn’t get involved as much as we would’ve liked. He only had two contested possession for the day, so just has to get back to playing to his strengths, which is winning the contested footy.

Mitch Golby

Golbs had 26 possessions – 10 contested – and added a bit of run and grunt to the midfield. He also played a bit across half-back and gave good direction and voice. He still needs to find consistency with his skills and defensive positioning.

Nick Hayes

Nick played down back and really accepted the challenge. He had a good day with 23 possession and nine marks, and provided some solid run of half back. Was one of our better performers on the day.

Archie Smith

Archie continues to show signs of improvement, which is really important. Each week is a new challenge for him, and a great learning opportunity. He again showed some pretty special traits, not only with his 27 hitouts, but also in his ability to get the ball around the ground.

Jordon Bourke

Jordon played down back on Josh Baxter, who was NEAFL’s leading goalkicker, and kept him goalless. In terms of his role, he did a great job, we probably just needs to provide us with a bit more run and help. He ended with 10 marks.

Sam Michael

He rotated between the ruck and up forward, and finished with 15 touches and 18 hitouts.

Zac O’Brien

Another hard-working midfield performance from Zac. He had 30 possessions, and ran out the game really well. He just needs to improve his ability to have high speed efforts.
