Sam Mayes’ sensational four-goal first half against the Giants last Saturday night confirmed what every Lions fan already knew – that the young South Australian is going to play a big role in the Club’s future.
Mayes has been a revelation since being selected with Pick No.8 in last year’s AFL National Draft.
He has not only had six 20-plus possession games already this season, but has booted 12 goals from his past seven outings playing between half-forward and the wing.
But it’s the defensive side of the 19-year-old’s game that has impressed the Lions coaches most.
“Mayesy’s been terrific. Part of his game which he has really been focussing on is his defensive side,” Assistant Coach Shane Woewodin told LIONS TV as part of the Vero Coaches’ Wrap.
“He’s not too worried about the goal-kicking, they’re more of a bonus. It’s a great attitude to have as a young player.
“His ability to run full length in both defence and attack has been very good for us. And his finishing skills, he’s an elite ball user who works very hard in a game.
“It’s great to see him cap off a great day with some goals.”
However one of Mayes’ four goals against Greater Western Sydney came under some criticism from Fox Footy commentator Jason Dunstall who has made no secret of his loathing for goals kicked along the ground during his popular Sunday program ‘Before the Bounce’.
“He’s in the Chief’s file apparently with that scrubber goal,” Woewodin said.
