LAST TIME THEY MET

The Lions hosted the Saints for their traditional Easter Thursday blockbuster in Round 5 of 2011 and were eager to get their first win for 2011 on the board.

In scrappy and slippery conditions, the two teams were evenly matched for most of the game, until the third quarter when the Lions failed to capitalise on their inside 50s.

While the Lions looked strong and led by 5 points at the final break, the Saints broke away to kick four goals to two to secure the win.

Jack Redden was the Lions’ major ballwinner with 27 disposals, Mitch Clark contributed four goals, and Daniel Merrett continued his outstanding form at full back, holding opponent Justin Koschitzke scoreless for the game.

Brownlow Medal votes: 3. D. Merrett (BL), 2. L. Montagna (StK), 1. J. Redden (BL).

The Lions will be looking for their fourth win in a row at home this weekend - a feat last achieved in Round 4 2010.

Three young Lions achieved career-highs last weekend against the Sydney Swans. Patrick Karnezis took 11 marks, while Pearce Hanley and Dayne Zorko collected 34 and 31 disposals respectively.

Defender Matt Maguire came to the Lions from St Kilda at the end of 2009 after 99 games with the Saints. Incidentally, Maguire has never played against St Kilda in Lions colours for a variety of reasons. This weekend he will again be sidelined with an elbow injury.

Daniel Rich has kicked 14 goals so far in 2012, equalling the most goals he has kicked in a season (he kicked 14 goals in both 2009 and 2011). It also ranks him third at the Club behind Jonathan Brown and Daniel Merrett for this year.
