Please find below Coach Shane Woewodin’s appraisal on each of the listed Lions who played against the Bombers.
Rohan Bewick | Roh was probably a chance to play senior footy last week – but didn’t get the call up. We played him again as a mid in NEAFL footy and resting deep forward when he wanted to; knowing his strengths as a forward option both in the air and on the lead. Roh was fantastic for us. He was the best player on the day, had 31 possessions and kicked three goals. He was good around the contest, took 11 marks and was dangerous when forward. He used the ball really well and gave us a lot of drive. Impacted the game considerably and a good way to finish off. |
Zac O'Brien | Played again as an inside mid. Rested forward again also. He had another really solid display, had 30 possessions. He was our highest clearance player on the day, he had seven of them. The good thing for Zac is that he both rebounded from defensive 50 and put balls inside the attacking 50 as well, he’s able to cover the ground really well and run both lengths. He laid another four tackles. |
Mitch Golby | Mitch, again, was used more as an inside mid this week. We didn’t play him out on the wing. Again very solid along with Zac. He was able to hit the scoreboard and kick two for us. Again high clearances, high tackles. He missed a couple of kicks on the day but played really well in his ability to cover the ground. |
Brent Staker | Final game for Stakes, it was. A good way to send him off as well. He started forward and we also used him as an inside mid. He kicked one, could have kicked a couple, had 18 touches. Nine tackles, so our leading tackler on the day. It was a great effort from Stakes. He pushed the footy inside 50 really well. He gave us a focal point up front. It was a great way to send him off into retirement. |
Archie Smith | Outstanding Archie was on the day. Won his position really well, impacted really well all over the ground we thought. Particularly early getting back into the defensive 50 and getting in the way. He marked the footy really well, which is the biggest part of Archie’s game. He only took a couple but his ability to mark a high ball and be in contests was good. He was more aggressive at centre square bounce for us, he was able to win clearances for us as well. The only thing Archie didn’t do was lay a tackle, generally he’s laid a couple this year but wasn’t able to hit the scoreboard with the tackles. |
Trent West | Westy came back to us after senior footy. Played more as a key positional forward, went through the ruck around the ground. He didn’t ruck centre square bounce for us, we kept him out of that one to help his knee. He had an impact on the game, was moving really well in the forward half, particularly in the contest. Took a few marks, still had an impact around the ground as a ruckman too. He gave us a real presence in and around the contest but more importantly he kicked two crucial goals with marks inside 50. He worked really well in tandem with Archie on the day. It was good to have him back and have an impact on the game for us. |
Josh Clayton | Josh was in until the morning of. He was crook in the previous 48 hours to that so had to withdraw due to illness. |
Leigh Harding | Leigh Harding filled in again for us to play his sixth game for the season as a development coach. He played pretty well, hit the scoreboard, kicked his two. He’d be pretty happy with that and the fact that he won a one on one crumbing goal on Yagmoor, which he’ll tell you about! |
