LIONS Reserves Coach Shane Woewodin blooded some new talent in the team’s seven point win over Aspley in Burpengary on Saturday.
“Six of our first year draftees played their first game representing the Club which was exciting. We only had 15 listed (Lions players), we played with eight top up and Academy players and I guess it was a young Aspley team as well – they had a few stars out.
“It was good to have a hit out and hit bodies from an opposition this time rather than our own. It was an exciting start and certainly something to build upon going forward”, Woewodin said.
However there was an injury concern for Archie Smith who rolled an ankle in the first half.
“There’s still a bit of swelling in there at the moment so he’ll be precautionary for the next one to two weeks. We’re hoping he can play in the scratch match next week against the SUNS. He may or may not. There is no further damage to it that I know of.”
“Other than a couple of corks and some general soreness that’s about it (for injuries) so we’ve come away fairly unscathed”.
Senior player Luke McGuane impressed after playing the previous week as a substitute in the NAB Challenge against St Kilda in Burpengary.
“Luke came back with a great attitude and performed admirably as a forward and did himself no harm at all with his performance and the way he competed for us as a senior player.”
“Young Nick Robertson certainly put his hand up with what he displayed particularly early in the game, and a couple of those first year players in defence may not get rewarded but it’s good to see some consistency and show them the way we want to play as well”, he said.
