Lions welcome Sunshine Coast game
The Brisbane Lions will play in the AFL’s first ever NAB Cup game on the Sunshine Coast when they host Carlton in Round 3 of the pre-season competition.
The game, announced today by the AFL, will be played at Maroochydore on Saturday 10 March.
Senior Coach Michael Voss said that it was a fantastic outcome for both the Lions and the game of AFL in Queensland.
“We are thrilled to be playing a NAB Cup game on the Sunshine Coast,” Voss said.
“It’s an area with significant AFL interest and participation and it’s great to be able to give something back to the community there.”
“We’ve got a strong supporter base up there too and we can’t wait to get out there and play in front of our Sunny Coast fans.”
Brisbane Lions General Manager, Football Operations, Dean Warren, said that the game would be crucial to engaging with the Sunshine Coast Community.
“This is an outstanding result for AFL in Queensland and on the Sunshine Coast,” Warren said.
“We have over 1,500 juniors in 11 Clubs participating in AFL on the Sunshine Coast, and hosting an AFL game in Maroochydore will be enormously beneficial to participation rates and the growth of the game.”
Ticketing details of the event will be released in February, with an expected ticketing release date of 6 February 2012.
