Brisbane Lions Assistant Coach Shane Woewodin said that rest, recuperation and preparation would be the team’s key focuses this week ahead of Saturday night’s clash against Richmond at the Gabba.

With a tough cross-country trip, a disappointing loss to West Coast and only a six-day turnaround between games, Woewodin told Lions TV these challenges would mean a lighter training load for the players ahead of this weekend.

“It’s all about recovery this week for the boys - we won’t be doing too much on the track,” Woewodin said.

“There’ll be a lot of ice baths and plunges, recovery and rehab.”

“It’s important that the boys can get up physically and [that] we freshen them up mentally… then regroup and tackle Richmond.”

The Tigers, sitting one place above the Lions on the ladder, have been a thorn in the Lions’ side in recent years - of the past nine matches, the Lions have managed only one win.

This, coupled with Richmond’s recent streak of close losses, will set the scene for a fierce clash at the Gabba between two sides determined to finish their seasons strongly, according to Woewodin.

“It’s an important week for the footy club - we really want to finish strong,” Woewodin said.

“We’ve got to get back to our work rate, and doing the little things right, and that all comes back to our preparation and what we do in and around the place during the week.”

“So come the afternoon of the game against Richmond, we know that we’ve done everything possible and prepared ourselves to go to battle.”
