Part four of the Club tribute to former Senior Coach Leigh Matthews ahead of the Lions Lethal Weekend on Friday 7 August in Melbourne.
The Club's Victorian Office is hosting a major Lion Loyalist Luncheon: Leigh Matthews Tribute on Friday 7 August followed by a Lions Lounge match coterie for the Lions v Essendon blockbuster at the MCG on Saturday night 8 August.
We've dubbed this 'dynamic double-header' the Lions Lethal Weekend and have packaged it up for corporates, members and supporters who would like to attend both or either football events.
To share the excitement leading up to this big weekend, we will be presenting some of Leigh Matthews' Lethal Moments from our Club's history each week...
LETHAL MOMENT#7. Four in a row denied (2004) The Lions aimed to become just the second side in VFL/AFL history behind Collingwood (1927-30) to win four premierships in a row.
The road to the Grand Final was not an easy one, with the Lions overcoming a young and exuberant Geelong side by a narrow margin in the Preliminary Final at the MCG to book a date with modern-day rivals Port Adelaide in the Grand Final.
But the Power stood in the way of the Lions, denying them their fourth premiership in a row and Matthews’ fifth flag as an AFL coach.
LETHAL MOMENT #8. Matthews achieves unique milestone (2007) In Round 7 against Adelaide at the Gabba, Matthews became the first person in VFL/AFL history to have played or coached 200 or more games with three different clubs.
Matthews played 332 matches with Hawthorn from 1969-85 and coached Collingwood 224 times from 1986-95 before joining the Lions in 1999.
Unfortunately his fairytale could not be complete as the Crows prevailed by 31 points.
Want to meet the man behind these moments and hear about these events from Leigh Matthews first-hand?
Want to re-join your friends and colleagues the very next night to watch the Lions claw into the Bombers in style at the MCG as they battle to make their first Finals appearance since 2004?
For booking and enquiries, please contact Andrew McLeish in the Lions Victorian Office: Tel (direct):03 8850 5602 or 0412 865 555 Email:amcleish@lions.com.au
Aaron remains sedated and in Intensive Care at GCUH. He underwent surgery on his fractured ribs and broken/dislocated arm yesterday, which was successful. We are hopeful for his recovery and will provide further updates as he makes progress.
