Retired Brisbane Lions champion Jonathan Brown will be among the 10 nominees vying for the AFL Players’ Association’s prestigious Madden Medal this Friday.
The Madden Medal – named in honour of former champions Simon and Justin Madden – was introduced in 2007 to recognise the retired player who has contributed most to the game and the broader community.
Brown is one of an esteemed group of nominees, which also includes Ben Rutten (Adelaide), Luke Ball (Collingwood), Nick Maxwell (Collingwood), Dom Cassisi (Port Adelaide), Daniel Jackson (Richmond), Lenny Hayes (St Kilda), Dean Cox (West Coast), Darren Glass (West Coast), and Daniel Giansiracusa (Western Bulldogs).
The winner will be decided by the board of the AFL Players’ Association and previous winners of the award, and will be announced this Friday.
The key criteria that are taken into consideration in determining the Madden Medalist are football achievement, personal development and community spirit and off-field engagement.
Three-time premiership hero Luke Power was a deserved winner of the Madden Medal in 2012, and remains the only Lions player to receive the honour.
Other former winners include: Glenn Archer (2007), Robert Harvey (2008), Michael O’Loughlin (2009), Brett Kirk (2010), Cameron Ling (2011), and Jude Bolton (2013).
