The Board of the Brisbane Lions has today announced the appointment of Malcolm Holmes as Chief Executive Officer.

Brisbane Lions Chairman Angus Johnson said Holmes had the skills and experience required to steer the Club into the future and would start in the role on Monday 7 March.

“Malcolm has a proven track record of successfully managing high profile organisations, including a number of sporting teams and bodies, both in Australia and New Zealand,” Mr Johnson said.

“His excellent management and strategic skills, as well as his strong leadership and business acumen, are exactly what the Lions need as we continue to build a strong and successful future.”

Until recently, Holmes was Chief Executive Officer for New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing. Prior to that role, Holmes was Chief Executive Officer of Brisbane Turf Club, overseeing significant change to that organisation including the first merger of major metro racing Clubs in Australia.

He has also held senior management positions at Australian Consolidated Press and the Wellington Rugby Union and Hurricanes Super Rugby Franchise, where he was Chief Executive Officer.

Holmes said he was looking forward to the task of moving the Lions into the future.

“I’m thrilled at my appointment and I’m very much looking forward to the challenge of steering this Club into the future,” said Holmes.

“The Brisbane Lions is an extremely proud Club that is steeped in history and while there are obvious challenges, I know we have fantastic foundations to build upon - a magnificent Club culture and extremely loyal and dedicated members and supporters. The entire organisation has demonstrated over the past six months the work ethic and willingness required to be successful and I will work hard to build on this foundation into the future.”

Holmes takes over from interim Chief Executive Officer Steven Wright.

Wright, appointed to the interim post in October last year, had been excellent in performing the role that included the initial implementation of recommendations from last year’s Club review.

“Steven is one of the most respected administrators in the industry and his reputation has only been enhanced by his contribution to this Club,” said Johnson.

“On behalf of the Board and the entire Lions organisation I would like to thank Steven for his outstanding efforts and achievements during his time as interim Chief Executive Officer.”
